Due to an error at the CRA, which our firm brought to the attention of the Minister of National Revenue, the personal tax filing deadline has been extended for all Canadians.  We now have until midnight Tuesday, May 5th to file our personal tax return.  The filing deadline for taxpayers reporting self-employment income remains as midnight Monday, June 15th.

We have received a few calls from clients recently where someone pretending to be a CRA agent tells them that their last five years of tax returns have been audited, and they will soon be arrested.

When I got home from work yesterday, there was a similar phone message on my machine. The caller said he was agent Jonathan Light, the matter was extremely time sensitive, and I was under special investigation. He did not leave a phone number, but I traced it using call display.

Out of interest, I called back this morning, spoke to someone with a thick accent (either African or middle eastern), who said that agent Light was busy, but he was agent Michael John. I asked for his badge number, which he gave as 1593. He said I owed $3,497 in taxes, and that arrest warrant CN14161 had been issued, and that CRA would sue me for $30,000 in penalties when it went to the Courthouse.

I guess he must have heard me giggling in the background because he hung up at that point.

We have posted this story on our web site and our Facebook page as a warning to clients. I spoke to Sidney RCMP, and they said it was one of the biggest scams going round right now. There was a lot of background noise as I spoke to the “agent”, so it sounds like they have a room full of people calling. Apparently, they ask for gift cards for the amounts owing, which hopefully will erase any last doubt you have in your mind that this is nothing but a scam.
